The massive Spanish form barrel with hook for facilitating use on a castle rampart, cannon muzzle with rudimentary front sight and beech rear sight. Beautifully struck at breech with maker's mark in a cartouche SUHL, and the mark of Suhl. Lock with rudimentary engraved match and pan cover, also struck with Suhl marks. Original steel trigger guard. Entire stock with 39" steel strap reinforcing to rampart hook. The darkened walnut full stock, molded at forend and beautiful fishtail butt. CONDITION: Metal would rate excellent for a matchlock of this type. Action works well, this is a sear matchlock. Stock has some original darkened finish with a few minor chips. Wormed throughout but still solid. Missing a portion at the butt where worms were more active. The look of this gun is exactly what you would want for a castle rampart matchlock gun. Guns of this type were used throughout continental Europe and undoubtedly a number of them came to the colonies for use during the 17th century. PROVENANCE: Former collection of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, purchased from Joe Kindig, Jr., Ex. William Rockhill Nelsom Trust. MZ
