Serial number 23634P for 1863. A genuine factory engraved Colt police. Barrel with standard address "Colt's USA, New York, US America". Barrel engraving consists of a three leaf clover amidst scrolls on a punch dot background. Cylinder engraved on the chambers with a scroll. Hammer engraved with a "wolf's" head. Frame engraved with scrolls on a punch dot background. Back strap and trigger guard elaborately engraved. Ivory grips appear to be one piece, with American eagle and shield and "E Pluribus Unum" on left side, certainly period and may be the original. Wedge is original and matches although engraving is worn. Cylinder number distorted but appears to match. Cylinder engraving matches perfectly. Arbor matches. Revolver is cased in what appears to be factory original mahogany case with period standard flask, nipple wrench, and French cap tin. CONDITION: Mostly grey metal, pin safeties are worn, engraving is fairly sharp throughout. Ivory grips have good hand wear and fine patina. Bottom of grips appear to have been cleaned but age cracking guarantees their age. Gun indexes properly. Case lid appears to be refinished; lining appears to be original. Partitions original as well. Bore is very good, with sharp lands and grooves, better than most percussion Colts. All in all a very attractive Civil War period Colt Police. Would be improved with better accessories. MZ
