This unusually large cutlass pistol with Bowie blade, nearly the size of the more famous Wilkes South Sea Expedition cutlass pistol by Elgin, has a full 12" long blade that is 1 - 5/16" wide. It is unmarked but obviously genuine and more importantly is accompanied by its original scabbard. CONDITION: Barrel is mostly smooth brown metal with some pitting mostly on left side, massive Bowie blade with minor pitting, slightly heavier towards the point. Frame with minor pitting but mostly grey metal. Figured walnut flattened bag butt with some overvarnish, secured with steel straps extending from original frame. Action functions. Rifled bore is good and will clean better. Massive pistol is 18 - 1/2" overall. Original leather scabbard is alligatored and somewhat tender, missing a piece just forward of where the barrel would insert. Chape and locket of proper construction but possibly later, as they show no appreciable wear, although they are made properly. This is a most impressive Morril, Mosman and Blair cutlass pistol, larger than any mentioned in Flayderman's, knife length usually 8 - 3/4" to 9 - 1/2", present example exceeds that considerably. MZ
