This rifle, circa 1815-1825, was built around Allentown in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. The rifle is attributed to Peter Kuntz. This is one of three known Peter Kuntz rifles, and was displayed in the Kentucky Rifle Association's President's display. The full octagon barrel has been relined, apparently to be shot. Both sights have double sets of engraved lines, both in front and behind them. The flat lockplate is marked "ALLPORT Late Wth / KETLAND & CO". The brass furniture includes a classic, flat Lehigh County sideplate terminating in an arrow at the back, and a classic faceted Lehigh County sideplate with lug in front of the bow. Full length figured maple stock with sliding wooden patchbox carved with an Indian head. Borders surround the lid on each side and a series of chevrons are in front of the lid. There is an incised Allentown Indian head or Liberty head in front of the trigger guard. The left side of the stock is carved with a large incised, whimsical 'C' scroll, as well as a series of chevrons, which continue above the relief molded cheekpiece. There is a series of X's carved around the barrel tang and in front of the buttplate tang. Complete with replaced wooden ramrod. CONDITION: Barrel has had some restoration near the breech and has been relined. From the rear sight forward, the barrel retains a dark patina and the breech portion retains an applied brown patina. Lock has been reconverted to flint and retains a contemporary finish. Brass retains a mellow, unpolished patina. Stock is very good with some later finish, a few scattered marks from use, and one minor area replaced on left side around foremost barrel pin. The patchbox lid is also a contemporary replacement. This rifle has attractive Lehigh form and displays fine carving. DMG
