(1884) 29 - 7/8" steel barrels are engraved with Purdey's Audley House address and Whitworth steel information on slightly raised, concave game rib. Barrel flats are stamped with London black powder proofs. Bottoms of barrels are stamped with serial numbers, "NOT FOR BALL", and barrel makers initials "CA" (? Aston). Top lever bar-in-wood action fitted with front spring rebounding locks with round bodied serpentine hammers having stylized dolphin heads features Purdey's hidden third fastener. Action and locks are engraved with James Lucas's exquisite miniature scroll with rose bouquet highlights. "J. Purdey & Sons" is on each lockplate. Top lever is engraved "PATENT". Serial number is on trigger guard tang. Very nicely marbled and somewhat fiddle figured European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 15 - 1/8" over black Decelerator pad. Stock features drop points, point pattern checkering, and a silver oval engraved "CJR" (?). Matching splinter forend has Anson release. CONDITION: Good to fine, as partially refinished. Barrels retain nearly all of a satin re-black. Top rib is loose and should be resoldered. Action retains a considerable amount, perhaps 10-15% original case hardening color where protected, with considerable scattered pitting, mostly around edges of locks. Stocks have old oil refinish with considerable wear. Metal is a bit proud. Checkering re-cut. Stock is sound around action, but with old 3/4" cracks starting behind hinge pin area, and behind right lock. Action is tight. Barrels are on face. Locks are fine. Top lever bar-in-wood Purdeys are not often found. MGM27
