(ca 1921) 26" and 28" chopper lump barrels (28" denoted by gold inlaid "C") are engraved with Purdey's famous Audley House London address and Whitworth steel information on slightly swamped narrow game ribs set with two ivory beads. Barrel flats are stamped with London nitro proofs for 2 - 1/2" chambers, and with re-proofs for 2 - 3/4". Bottoms of barrels are stamped with matching serial numbers and barrel makers initials "WH" (Bill Hill) on bottoms of left barrels. Tube numbers "53029" and "53030" are on 26" barrels, and "53099" and "53100" are on 28" barrels. Case hardened self opening sidelock action features automatic safety (SAFE inlaid in gold), hidden third fastener, bushed strikers, side clips, raised rib tumbler end cocking indicators, and Miller selective single trigger. Action and lockplates are engraved with full coverage very nicely cut and shaded large open scrolling acanthus. "J. Purdey & Sons" is in rectangular device on each lockplate, also on bottom of action over "London". Fences are full relief carved with oak leaves. This fine engraving was most likely the work of the revered Harry Kell. Scroll engraved trigger guard with serial number on tang extends to horn grip cap with gold oval inset on bottom engraved "Charles P. Skouras" "825 North Roxbury Drive" "Beverley Hills". Lightly figured and streaked American walnut capped pistol grip buttstock measures 14" over thin Silver type pad. Flat top point pattern checkering runs over top of grip. Well shaped drop points are behind lockplates, and toe line has individual gold letters "C P S" inlet. Matching splinter ejector forend with Anson release, services both barrel sets. Actioner's initial "H" (mostly likely Fred Hughes, long time Purdey actioner) is on iron. Gun is housed in relatively new good quality leather case with stitched leather corners, lined in burgundy cloth. CONDITION: Excellent, as completely refurbished, retaining nearly all of "best" London re-black on both sets of barrels, most likely done at time of re-proof. Action retains nearly all of a correct case hardening re-color done after installation of Miller trigger. Top lever and trigger guard re-blued, and retain essentially all of that blue. Stock retains essentially all of a heavy Slackum finish, somewhat crazed. Bores are excellent. Action is tight. Barrels are on face. Drop is down a bit. Iron is beginning to mark bottom of action. Ejectors are in time. Trigger works. MGM30.
