(Circa 1914) This fine condition big bore double nitro rifle has 26" chopper lump barrels fitted with file cut quarter rib holding one standing two folding leaf express rear sight ( leaves marked for 100, 200, and 300 yards) and front ramp with silver and flip-up porcelain night beads. Tops of barrels are engraved "Webley & Scott Ltd." along with "London & Birmingham". Mid rib is engraved ".475. No 2, 85. Grs Smokeless, 480. Gn Bullet". Barrel flats are stamped with London nitro proofs for this cartridge, along with Webley bullet trademarks. Serial number is on heavy splinter. A sling loop is soldered to bottom rib. Case hardened square back sidelock action features pivoting third fastener which engages square shouldered dolls head rib extension. Action also features automatic safety (SAFE engraved), bushed strikers, and double triggers. Action and locks are engraved with 70% coverage well cut shaded scroll. "Webley & Scott Ltd" is on each lockplate. Serial number is on trigger guard tang which extends to engraved steel grip cap. Dark, nicely streaked, and lightly fiddle figured European walnut capped pistol grip buttstock measures 14 - 5/16" over newer Silver type pad. Stock is classically appointed with drop points, flat top point pattern checkering, sling loop, and vacant silver oval. Splinter Southgate ejector forend has forward pivoting lever release. Gun is housed in a best quality oak and leather case with brass corners, lined in dark green cloth. Case contains a square oil bottle, some cleaning brushes, and a RED AND BLUE box of Kynoch cartridges. Also included is a target on John Rigby card showing good regulation with one high shot due to hang fire with old ammunition. Weight: 11 lbs 2 oz. CONDITION: Very fine, mostly original. Barrels retain 70 - 80% original blue with numerous light marks and considerable hand wear on sides. Action and lockplates retain 60 - 70% original case hardening color, browning and flecking on bottom, most loss on right side due to cleaning. Stocks retain most of what appears to be their original finish with considerable marks and dents, mostly on butt, checkering lightly worn and has not been re-cut. Bores are very fine to excellent, with perhaps a hint of softness in right throat (may clean to be excellent plus). Action has just a hint of looseness with forend removed, a bit tighter with forend installed., Right barrel is slightly off face. Case leather is very fine to excellent, still light in color, with some marks and bumps. Interior cloth is very fine. A great rifle in a great caliber. MGM4.
