Serial number 163058, manufactured in 1898. Special order 26" half octagon to round barrel with full length magazine tube. Lyman #5 combination fold down front sight, standard Marlin rear barrel sight, and Lyman mid-range tang sight with large aperture disk. Takedown frame. Highly figured deluxe walnut pistol grip stock and forearm with "B" style checkering on stock and forearm. Blue with case hardened frame, forearm cap, lever, hammer, and buttplate. Barrel marked with two line Marlin address and "SPECIAL SMOKELESS STEEL" on left side barrel flat with 30-30 caliber designation at breech. Factory engraved in Marlin No. 2 grade featuring a buck deer within a round panel scene surrounded with scrolls on right side of receiver. A running buck deer being chased by a dog within an oval panel scene surrounded with scroll work on receiver left side. Scroll engraving on takedown lug, barrel breech, top & bottom of receiver, and top tang. The name "Henry W. Cannon" hand engraved in script on front right bottom corner of receiver. Speculation being this is Henry W. Cannon that was the comptroller of currency under President Chester A. Arthur. Cannon was also noted as being a bank officer in St. Paul, MN., Washington, DC., and New-York City were he became President of Chase National Bank. He was also known as sponsoring Rear Admiral Robert Perry's exploration of the North Pole in 1909. Cannon was also credited for building and endowing libraries in Delhi, NY, and Franklin NY. CONDITION: Nearly mint overall with most all original case color on receiver, hammer, lever, and forearm cap showing light wear. Traces of case color on buttplate turning a "nickel" color. 98+% original blue on barrel, magazine tube, and sights. All original unmolested screws. Wood is phenomenal showing little wear. Bore is excellent, action is crisp and tight as new. Overall an extremely handsome deluxe engraved Marlin rifle that would be difficult to improve on. -MKS-
