A rare German silver mounted rifle by Nicanor Kendall, better known for his attractive underhammer pistols, that is elaborately cased and engraved. One 30" .50 caliber part octagon part 16 sided smoothbore, other .41 caliber 30" octagonal rifled barrel. Tang of breech stamped "SMITHS IMPROVED PATENT STUD LOCK", barrels stamped "N. Kendall Windsor, VT". Metals parts serial numbered 851. German silver mounts comprising beautifully engraved trigger guard. Diminutive sideplates, patchbox beautifully engraved. Crescent buttplate, engraved. Plain cheeckpiece escutcheon. Underhammer and breech with rudimentary engraving. Handsome cherry wood stock finely carved with cheekpiece. CONDITION: Both barrels retain considerable brown finish. Stock retains most of a very attractive old refinish. Rifle is cased in an old mahogany case with red velvet lining. Bores are both good. Comes with accessories comprising a powder flask, bullet mold, patch cutter, and screw driver. Case has split ring in lid in the English style. PROVENANCE: James D.
