Pistol and stock of standard configuration throughout. Barrel dated on tang 1855, lock dated 1856, stock properly numbered on yoke "5". With only 4021 manufactured, the 1855 pistol carbine is a very scarce Martial pistol. Most of these have reproduction stocks, this example has its original Springfield stock. CONDITION: Barrel rates excellent with a coat of old varnish protecting the bright polished metal, lock is equally crisp, Maynard primer parts are intact and still retain original arsenal finish. Walnut stock rates excellent, with the exception of a lozenge shaped carving forward of the trigger guard. No inspector's mark on the stock but retains considerable raised grain. Brass mounts show very little wear, butt stock rates excellent overall. Good crisp "5" on yoke and "U.S." on buttplate. Overall one of the better examples of this handsome U.S. Martial single-shot pistol. Many were issued for the 1st and 2nd U.S. Calvary in the American West. MZ
