Lot consists of: four naval cutlasses, one reproduction and three original. (A) Reproduction Baltimore style naval cutlass. A 1980's copy of a scarce War of 1812 era US cutlass. Useful as a place holder in a collection until a real one comes along. (B) 1860 pattern US Navy cutlass. Now known to have been ordered and first produced in 1861. This has an Ames scroll address on reverse ricasso and 1861 date, making it first year of production. Rack number "30" engraved at upper edge outer cupguard. CONDITION: Very good to excellent. Untouched age tone to brass hilt. Leather appears original with just minor chipping at pommel and guard. Wire may have been replaced, since most were stripped, but is accurate. Blade pad is replaced. Blade is smooth metal, bright mixed with grey. A couple of pencil points of light pitting at blade edge and three or four shallow nicks more evident to the touch than the eye. (C) Dutch Klewang with blued blade and openwork guard, black painted wood grip with copper rivets. Some of these made their way into some US hands and were used as machetes in the Pacific Theater. CONDITION: Very good to excellent. Slight split to wood at pommel. Slight thinning of blue toward tip. (D) Regulation US Navy 1917 pattern cutlass. Deep U.S.N. stamp obverse ricasso. Deep blue blade and solid cup hilt. Black painted wood grip with cross hatching. CONDITION: Very good. Wear to paint on grip, but wood is excellent. A few light edge nicks near the tip. Some light scattered very small brown spots on upper portion of blade both sides, mostly lower edge last 4" of edge and clip point, but all blend in with the blue pretty well. (SR)
