The serial number on this cavalry Colt falls into the range of known Custer guns. It is a standard issue Army revolver from 1874, prior to the Battle at Little Bighorn. All of the numbers are matching and you will find Ainsworth A stamp on the barrel, cylinder, trigger guard and backstrap. The grips show heavy added finish and a Liberty 1865 dated dime has been set into each side but any cartouche stamp has long disappeared. Two holes for lanyard were also drilled into the base of the grips. The frame has the standard US stamp with two line patent stamp. The slanted barrel legend is sharp. This guns serial number falls between 4500-5504 which was a 7th Cavalry issue block, Colt Lot 5. CONDITION: No original factory finish remaining and is now a simple pleasing soft patina with an overall even finish and sharp edges and legends with slight wear at muzzle from holster. The action is crisp and the rifling is strong. A very clean example of a Custer Era Colt that falls right into the correct shipment block. DB CORRECTION: Serial number is 5476.
