(ca 1873) 34" three stripe Damascus barrels are engraved "Stephen Grant 67A St. James's Street London." on slightly raised concave game rib. Barrel flats are stamped with London black powder proofs for eight bore. Serial number is on bottom of barrels. Robust round bodied Jones underlever action is fitted with peninsula back spring non-rebounding locks with serpentine round bodied hammers having stylized dolphin heads. Action and locks are engraved with 70% coverage very well cut shaded classic scroll. "S. Grant" is on each lockplate. Serial number is on trigger guard tang, as well as on water table which is also stamped with "ECH" (E. C. Hodges?) crowned logos over "828". Nicely fiddle figured and lightly streaked European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 13 - 7/8" over steel buttplate. Widely spaced point pattern checkering is at grip. A silver oval with monogram "LP" is on toe line. Matching splinter forend attaches to barrels with sliding side bolt through shaped and engraved steel escutcheons. Gun comes in large possibly original oak and leather case with brass corners, lined in navy blue cloth. A reproduction Grant label is in lid. CONDITION: Very good to fine, as partially refinished. Barrels retain nearly all of a well done re-brown with excellent definition to pattern. Action and locks retain 25-35% original case hardening color where protected, remainder a smooth pewter gray to brown. Stocks retain an old oil refinish over a number of marks and dings, checkering cleaned a while ago. Bores are very fine to excellent, with some frosting. Action is tight. Barrels are on face. Locks are excellent. Case leather is dark with many scuffs and rubs. Straps and handle are good. Renewed interior cloth is excellent. A neat old big bore waterfowler with shootable dimensions. MGM10.
