This is a very rare, documented Savage model 1907 .45 Amy test pistol. According to the Edward Meadows book "U.S. MILITARY AUTOMATIC PISTOLS", this particular gun by serial number, was issued to Troop I, 3rd Cavalry Regiment stationed at Fort Wingate, New Mexico. This information can be found on page 261. While the serial number block allocated by Savage suggest as many as 288 of these pistols made, Savage has stated that only 200 were actually produced. These guns, out of a total of 8 different firearms submitted during the "1911 Trials" were the only viable competitor to the Colt 1911 with the Colt design eventually winning out. Located on the front lip of the frame is the factory applied marking of "R2" which denotes that it was retained by the Savage factory after being returned from the US Army for their archives. Simply marked on the top of the slide "CAL. 45". "SAFE" & "FIRE" markings on the left side of the frame. This gun was purchased in 1977 at auction when the Savage Arms Company sold off its collection. Purchased directly by a well known dealer who was located only a 15 minute drive in a neighboring town to Utica, NY where the factory was located. Accompanying this gun is a handwritten list of the guns, by serial number, that were purchased directly from that auction. There is another receipt, dated 2007, showing the sale of this gun from that dealer to the consignor. There is also other accompanying paperwork. All numbers, including the magazine are matching with the exception of the left grip which is numbered "38" and the right grip which is unnumbered. CONDITION: Retains 90% of a thin factory refinish. Markings are clear. Wood grips are good with good checkering. Bore is fine with strong rifling. Good mechanical function, although the slide release spring is missing as is common on these. GR
