Morse carbines were made at the South Carolina State Military Works in Greenville, South Carolina. Approximately 1,000 Morse Carbines manufactured, with a few noted having serial numbers slightly higher than that. They were made in three distinct models, with this gun falling into the serial number range and configuration of a Third Model. Correctly marked with assembly number "VIII" on the hammer, interior of side plate, mainspring screw, and sliding breech block. "IIII" is marked internally on the receiver and side plate. Cryptic "R" marking on receiver. Matching serial number on the inside of the brass breech door and receiver. Interesting in that the number on the breech block door is stamped twice. The number "952" is stamped into the underside of the stock, under the receiver tang, which is most likely a factory error. Cleaning rod and jag in butt are original. CONDITION: This gun is in way above average condition for one of these. Retains a pleasing patina overall. Wood has light dings and handling marks with no cracks or repairs. Fine mechanical function. Bore is excellent, with sharp rifling with crisp and clear lands and grooves. There is very little wear on the face of the breech block. The only drawback is that the lower butt stock screw is a replacement, otherwise this is an outstanding example of a Confederate Morse carbine for the most discerning collector. GR
