Manufactured for the US Army in 1875, only a bit over 3000 guns were made in this first series. They were all chambered for the .45 S&W cartridge, had 7" barrels, blue finish with case color hammer and trigger guard with two piece smooth walnut grips. The butt is stamped US with S&W patent on left side of barrel, Schofield patent on right side of barrel. The grips have a cartouche on right side for Samuel Lewis (SBL). The bottom of the barrel is stamped L & P. CONDITION: Blue is thinning on sides with bright blue in flute and on base. Frame retains approximately 80% bright factory blue with handling marks. Straps still retain 70% original blue with thinning. Nice case colors on hammer and latch. Generous amounts of fire blue still remain on most screws. Cylinder retains about 50% blue mixing with soft patina. All legends are sharp. The bore and action are fine. It is apparent that this early Schofield saw little use. One of the better existing examples. DB
