With letter from noted expert John Kopec, his comments on this fine revolver are as follows: Frame was from Lot 5, the prime lot from which the 7th Cavalry received their first quota of revolvers on July 2, 1874. This revolver is listed as being overhauled and shortened during the 1895-96 period. All numbers on gun are still matching but very faint on backstrap. He states that in his opinion, the gun was completely restored by the Colt factory prior to 1941 and that the barrel may have been shortened at that time. He deems the grips to be original but are to worn to reveal any existing cartouche. The base pin and the trigger were replaced when refinished. He also notes that part of the barrel address was polished away at same time. The Ainsworth A stamp can still be seen on the barrel, cylinder and trigger guard. CONDITION: The original grips have some finish loss and are shy at toe. The action and bore are sharp. The metal retains nearly 100% of the expertly, probable Colt, refinish. A sharp Colt from the prime Custer range. DB
