According to noted expert, John Kopec, he states that this serial number is only six numbers away from a 7th Cavalry Colt located at an Indian village near the Little Bighorn. It is from the prime Lot 5 group of which most of the first orders filled for the 7th Cavalry were derived. It is Ainsworth inspected whose A stamp can still be seen on trigger guard, cylinder and back strap. All visible matching numbers. US and two line patent visible on frame. Barrel address is partially visible. John goes on to note that this revolver remains in near relic condition with heavy pitting, the barrel shortened to about five inches and front sight re-positioned. CONDITION: The grips are later replacement. There are numerous dents about the metal. This gun saw hard Western or Indian usage after the Bighorn. It still functions and locks up fine. The rifling is still sharp with usual abrasion. This gun has probable Custer tie in and definitely saw use out west for years afterwards. DB
