Colt Single Action Army U.S. marked Calvary series revolver in Custer serial number range, .45 Colt, 7- 1/2" barrel. Full Ainsworth inspections. Referenced in book "Cavalry and Artillery Revolvers, etc." by Kopec and Fenn, page 260 & 261, indicating shipment of Lot 5 likely to the 7th Cavalry. The table on page 260 puts this Single Action in the range issued to Company M, 7th Cavalry under Reno's command. The revolver retains a good sharp italic address on barrel with strong U.S. stamp on frame and two line patent markings. Ainsworth inspection stamps and matching numbers except cylinder which is numbered 4870. The cylinder condition and aging matches perfectly and was probably armory switched during an inspection and/or repair. The grips exhibit light Ainsworth cartouche on left panel. A very nice and original Custer range full length single action. Kopec notes the vice marks on barrel, the ejector spring is modern replacement, the main spring is from an 1860 Army and that the A is still visible on butt of grips.
CONDITION: All legends are sharp. Both sides of grips have light chip at toe. There does not appear to be any original finish remaining having turned to a soft homogeneous patina. A sharp, crisp, Custer range cavalry Colt. DB
