It is estimated that approximately 2000 Second Models were made from 1860-62 and the majority saw hard use during the war and with a very low survival rate as they were never bulk sold to dealers after the war. Cavalry units that were issued the Secon Model included the 1st Maine, 1st New Jersey, 1st Penn., 1st and 2nd Indiana an 1st and 2nd Rhode Island whose cavalry carried them in the first Battle of Bull Run. This was the last Burnside to be made without a wooden forend. The walnut butt stock shows numerous handling marks and no visible cartouche present. 1860 patent date on lever. Burnside stamped on right side. Visible matching numbers. Model 1861 stamped on barrel with H inspector stamp on top of frame. CONDITION: Rifle remains in all original condition with all metal surfaces a soft even brown patina. Rear sight is intact. Action works fine. Bore has residue but rifling is sharp. This is a used Civil War carbine that is intact, working and original having never been cleaned or altered. A very rare carbine. DB
