Original 19th century U.S. Navy 3” breech loading cannon in the 500 pound class marked on top of tube between trunnions, “3”/RIFLE/500LBS/NO.8/” with Naval anchor proof and right trunnion marked “463 lbs” and dated 1881. Brass elevation screw on carriage is dated 1878 and U.S.N.Y. inspected. This gun is identified by serial number as being deployed on the USS Brooklyn. This would have been an early breech loading replacement for the Dahlgren boat howitzer. PROVENANCE: Formerly in the Springfield Arsenal LLC Artillery collection of John Morris. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is very good to fine with a nice pleasing patina. Exterior of barrel very good with a pleasing patina. No breech block present. Markings are fairly crisp and discernible. Brass components on carriage have been heavily polished but markings are mostly discernible. Trunnions and left rimbase are pitted. Bore rifling is crisp with pitting. A historic navy piece from the latter park of the 19th century seldom encountered. JWK 2019-10-216
