Steel barrel is heavily engraved at breech with wriggle work and spray of leaves. Swamp muzzle chiseled and engraved en suite. Barrel signed in a flourished reserve "Playfair Aberdeen". Charles Playfair worked between 1796 and 1859. Bolted lock with push on safety finely engraved with scrolls and signed "Playfair Aberdeen". Double neck cock engraved en suite with lock. Roller bearing frizzen engraved. Steel stock engraved with foliage en suite with lock and barrel. Plain ball trigger and pricker. Finely made ramrod, possibly the original. Playfair made excellent guns, the present example is no exception. CONDITION: Barrel is cleaned over minor pitting, stock is cleaned with more significant pitting on spine and left side. Mainspring is either absent or broken as gun will not cock properly. Push on safety likely a replacement. Bore is fair. Steel belt hook the original. A good example of a Scottish flintlock dress pistol by one of the better makers. MZ
