Heavily swamped steel barrel, fluted at breech with integral back sight, muzzle swamped and octagonal. Heavily engraved throughout its length with scrolls and Scottish themes. Pierced ramrod is an excellent replacement. The steel full stock engraved throughout its length en suite with incorporating strapwork. Scottish thistles, foliage, and gadrooning. Trigger guard with engraving (heavily worn). The butt inlaid with silver decoration comprising circles and arrow tips. Short belt hook finely pierced and engraved. Lock well signed "John Christie Stirling" with engraving behind cock. Swan neck cock, plain, with border engraving. Plain frizzen. CONDITION: Barrel with wear and pitting common to mid-18th century all steel pistols. Stock with condition similar to barrel with wear and pitting. Trigger guard more heavily pitted than stock and barrel. Belt hook with some pitting and wear. Lock with moderate pitting, hammer appears to be the original. Frizzen possibly original as well, one frizzen screw replaced. Action works as it should. Bore is pitted. Altogether a very rare and handsome Scottish belt pistol. PROVENANCE: Sotheby's London, Lot 346, June 1987. MZ
