One of the least common US issued handguns produced by Colt. A production of less than 1,200 are believed to have purchased by the US Government and issued to our troops during the early Indian Wars period. Chambered for the uncommon .44 Colt Centerfire cartridge, these revolutionary revolvers represent the transitional period of percussion to cartridge firearms. Originally produced with a 8" barrel with one piece walnut grips and using the patented conversion invented by Assistant Superintendent Charles Richards of Colt Manufacturing. Serial numbered 5629, matching numbers found on frame, barrel, trigger guard, wedge, and butt. Assembly number 1144 is found on loading gate and cylinder pin. Strong "US" inspection found on trigger guard beneath serial number and faint US inspectors cartouche is evident on right side of grips. Revolver has been modified to 5 - 3/4" barrel length at a later period and probably used in the Western US during its period of unrest and expansion. CONDITION: Good overall with properly functioning action. Finish had turned plum brown with light surface pitting from period use. Bore is fair with strong rifling. Wedge screw is a modern replacement, balance of revolver is authentic. Grips are full sized and with slight material loss at toe. A extremely uncommon and desirable US inspected transitional revolver. TDW
