The Webley-Fosbery automatic revolver was made from 1901 until 1924, with the earlier examples only being offered in .455. Recoil operated. The entire top of the gun moves to the rear of the frame and advances the cylinder while cocking the hammer. Designed for military use, especially by Cavalry units, the design was never officially adopted by the British Government. A total of 4,750 of these guns were produced. Marked on the top of the barrel rib "W.W. GREENER. 68.HAYMARKET.LONDON." This particular example is inscribed on the back strap "H.W.C. Wicks". Accompanying this gun is copious correspondence and historical military background on Lt. Col. Henry Williams Cairns Wicks, OBE, DSO. He was born in 1881 and joined the Seaforth Highlanders in 1900. Quickly rising through the ranks he served throughout World War I, having been involved in actions in North West India known as the Engagement at Matta of 1908. He was twice wounded in action. It is quite possible that this gun accompanied him throughout his military career, perhaps even when he was recalled to service in 1941 to return to his old regiment for WWII. This gun has a standard brown leather British military style leather holster and "Sam Brown" belt with it. CONDITION: Gun retains a pleasing patina with approximately 30% original blue remaining. All markings are clear. Grips have some light dings and handling marks. Bore is very good with strong rifling. Good mechanical function. Leather holster and belt have strong stitching and light handling marks. GR
