Standard model 1889 USN cartridge box. Embossed "USN" on the flap, and "USN" marked on the brass snap. Wood insert. What makes this one special is that it is accompanied by the original wood spindles and brass collars from the "cartridge packs". The collars are both marked "PATENT APR.30.89". The wood spindles are unmarked. Manufactured by Colt Firearms Company. The “cartridge packs” basically amount to the first production "speed loaders". Issued with the .38 caliber Navy Model 1889 Colt Revolver. The cartridge pack consisted of a central wooden plug with a brass wrap-around collar that secured 6 cartridges around the plug. Due to the expendable nature of the pack, once the cartridges were loaded into the pistol’s cylinder, the plug and collar were discarded, making these pieces extremely rare today. The cartridge box was designed to hold 2 of these packs, with 3 loose rounds of ammunition on either end. Both "packs" are included, although there is no ammunition. Accompanied by an old hand written note which states "Ctg box carried by Col. Rolfer- when serving as a Naval Officer during the Spanish American War. A novel device for reloading his Colt service revolver". CONDITION: Leather on cartridge box is soft and pliable with some crazing. Markings are clear. Stitching is solid. Belt loops are intact. Wood spindles have some light handling marks. Both brass collars are well marked with a mild patina. GR
