This is an original circus or side show banner "Histah and the Monsters"" by Fred G. Johnson, a prolific sideshow banner artist whose career spanned 65 years. His banner paintings were displayed at the Chicago World's Fair of 1933, called A Century of Progress, and by circuses such as Ringling Brothers, Barnum & Bailey, and Clyde Beatty. He has been called the "Picasso" of circus art. These bright and colorful banners drew in the crowd with the mystery of circus excitement and surprise. Johnson is considered to be among the top in his field. This 8" by 11" poster dates to the period and is distinctively signed by the artist. It is in original condition with some repairs to the canvas and the eyelets used for hanging. Last offered for sale at Guerney's Coney Island Auction in 1988.
