Samuel A. Robb was born in Brooklyn in 1851 into a family of Scottish shipcarvers and carpenters. Some biographies give the date of 1864 as the start of his work as a professional wood carver, beginning with his five-year apprenticeship as a teenager. This Indian maiden is very much in the style of Samuel Robb and has been attributed to him by the consignor. The very subtle color pallet befits the fine lines and subtle detail of the carving, and she has an overall impressive look, being life-sized with presence and holding the identifiable tobacco leaves. There are several stress and age cracks in the carving and the base appears to have been reconstructed at one time. There is some old paint present mixed with some areas of touch up, but expertly done. One iron wheel showing oxidation, but a great carving with a fantastic look.

This is not a standard shippable item and will require 3rd party shipping or pickup arrangements to be made.
