This may well be a one-of-a-kind factory special single barrel shotgun made as a 12 gauge high grade version of the Handy-Gun. From an era of the Ithaca Auto-Burglar guns, and Handy-Guns this specimen stands out as exquisitely made with beautiful color case hardening, fine checked forend and grip surfaces. Hard rubber cap at base of wooden grip. Marked with the company name with decorative scroll on the left side of the receiver and with the manufacturer’s name and address on the top of the barrel. External visible numbers are matching. Original serial number “4 1902” inside trigger guard and partially visible on left side of trigger, and also on underside of barrel when removed. IRS registration number tastefully applied inside channel of receiver and concealed left side of barrel where it is not visible when the gun is assembled. Interesting takedown cross pin on right side of receiver which is revealed by flipping open a trap door and then rotating the key counter-clockwise. Underside of barrel under the foe-end marked with a “G”. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is extremely fine to near excellent with over 95% original lustrous blue finish with a slight blemish on the left side of the barrel underneath the manufacturer’s address. Case coloring extremely fine and vivid with colors fading to a gray patina on the trap door on right side. Wood extremely fine with some light handling marks and a slight nick to the pistol grip cap. Mechanics are crisp including the auto-ejector. Bore is extremely fine to near excellent, shiny and bright. Davenport Arms Company generally has a reputation for plain “workhorse” firearms, but this specimen illustrates what wonderful high quality workmanship and embellishment the company was capable of. As fine as anything America was producing in the early 20th century. Perhaps it was made for an executive of the company, or as a display or presentation piece. In any event, this is a wonderful example of American gun making. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. THIS ITEM WILL INCUR A $5.00 TRANSFER TAX IF TRANSFERRED ON AN ATF FORM 4. THIS ITEM IS FULLY TRANSFERABLE ON AN ATF FORM 3 OR 4 CLASSIFIED AS "ANY OTHER WEAPON". JWK 2020-05-060
