Standard configuration 1895 Mauser as would have been used during the Boer Wars with 2000 yard ladder rear sight. What makes this rifle interesting is the affixed plaque on right side of stock which reads "1st Bn Royal Irish Regimental Library Mauser Rifle Trophy Boer War 1899". The 1st Battalion was moved to South Africa in late 1899 to fight in the Second Boer War, where they participated in several battles with distinction. Presumably, this rifle was captured at one point and kept by the unit as a souvenir. CONDITION: Very good as field used. Metal has numerous spots of old oxidation, wood with numerous bumps and bruises. Action works appropriately, rifling has strong lands and grooves with frosting to lands. Presents well. A very interesting rifle! EW
