Prussian Model 1871 Cavalry Carbine manufactured in 1876 by Steyr. Receiver is marked "MOD. 71" one the left side, with "1876" (Year of manufacture) and "1877" (Year of issue) on the right side. Barrel is marked "OESTERR.WAFFFB.GES." over the top, with military acceptance stamps on the right, and a crown over "FW" on the left hand side. Imperial eagle stamped on underside of receiver. Buttplate is stamped "3.U.4.64" indicating issue to the 3rd Uhlan Regiment. Receiver, barrel, rear sight assembly, and trigger assembly are matching. The bolt, cocking piece, safety, barrel band, nose cap, buttplate, stock, and screws are all matching with the number "172". Bolt stop and bolt stop screw are mismatched. CONDITION: Receiver is in the white and shows age related discoloration, some small areas of cleaned pitting, and a small area on the left side that has been cleaned. Barrel retains fair amounts of its original blue finish, exhibiting thinning all around, with a pleasant patina showing through. Arsenal stamps are sharp. Bore is bright, exhibiting well defined lands and grooves, as well as some areas of cleaned pitting throughout. Stock has been sanded and refinished, arsenal stamps are no longer present, but the stock retains an "H" stamp on the bottom of the buttstock. Small crack present to the rear of the trigger guard screw. An attractive example of a 144 year old Uhlan unit marked Model 1871 carbine. -MLW-
