Civil War Turner bayonet complete with the original scabbard. This bayonet was produced by the cutlery maker Bown & Tetley of Pittsburgh, and the ricasso is appropriacy marked "Bown & Tetley / Pittsburgh". These bayonets are mostly associated with Turner organizations, which were German-American athletic clubs in the United States. At the start of the Civil War many Turners enlisted in the army and preferred to serve in units comprised of other members from the Turner organizations. Some notable Turner regiments were the 9th Ohio volunteer infantry and the 17th Missouri volunteer infantry, known as the Western Turner Rifles. Like the other Turner bayonets, this one is massive and is constructed of a yataghan style blade that measures 21" in length. The bayonet also features a 5" heavy cast brass handle and a large cast slot on the handle which was used to connect the bayonet to the Turner rifle. The blade remains bright, with a few chips along the edge, and scattered blemishes. The blade is not tight in the guard, and wobbles significantly when the blade is pushed. The bayonet is complete with its period leather and copper scabbard. The scabbard is missing its brass throat and stud exhibits cracks and creases in the leather. The stitching on the scabbard remains firm and the leather remains pliable. This is a fine example of a desirable Civil War bayonet. CONDITION: Good. JLD
