Early SP1 AR-15 manufactured by Colt for commercial sales in 1966. This example is scarce in that on top of being an early production SP1, the serial number is devoid of a "SP" prefix and instead reads "SERIAL 07733". This lack of an "SP" prefix appears to be specific to SP1 rifles manufactured in 1966, as it appears somewhere in the mid 7000s range, the "SP" prefix was eliminated, appearing to be picked back up again in the early to mid 8000s serial range. This example bears the Rampant Colt logo followed by "COLT/ AR-15" above stampings stipulating caliber, model, and serial number on the left side of the receiver, with stampings bearing Colt's manufacturer information present above the safety selector switch. Barrel is stamped "12" on the bottom towards the muzzle, and "MP" to the rear of the bayonet lug. Features include a slabside lower receiver, 20" barrel, 3-prong flash hider, triangular ventilated polymer forend, polymer buttstock with drain hole, early pattern buttplate, as well as a checkered polymer pistol grip. This example is accompanied by a Colt "AR-15 Sporter Rifle" manual" and sling. CONDITION: Metal components retain the vast majority of their original factory applied finish, exhibiting a few small spots of silvering as well as some light superficial handling marks. Mirror bore, exhibiting well defined rifling throughout. Polymer furniture is excellent, showing few superficial marks from handling and storage. Manual exhibits some light wear and a few coffee stains, but is otherwise fine. A very fine example of a scarce Colt SP1 rifle. MLW
