Originally developed and produced by Smith & Wesson to compensate for the U.S. Navy Seals lack of imported Swedish M/45 submachine guns during the Vietnam War. This example, with a "U" serial number prefix, was produced for the civilian and law enforcement market, with the right side of the magazine release assembly bearing the Smith & Wesson logo and the left side bearing Smith & Wesson's manufacturer information. Right side of receiver is stamped "MOD. 76" followed by the serial number, with "SMITH & WESSON" on the left. Selector switch is marked "SAFE", SEMI", and "FULL". Features include a matte grey finish, 8" barrel, full-length perforated barrel shroud, standard fixed front and rear sights, ambidextrous selector switch, side-folding stock, as well as 2-piece checkered black plastic grips. Side-folding stock features a rubberized coating, providing additional control and comfort for the operator. Registry lists the Manufacturer block as "SMITH AND WESSON", with the Model block listed as "76". Complete with 1 36-round magazine. CONDITION: Metal components retain ample amounts of their original factory-applied matte grey finish, exhibiting a few scattered superficial marks from handling and storage, as well as the usual area of wear on the receiver from operation of the selector switch. Bore is bright, exhibiting mild oxidation within the grooves, and retains good rifling throughout. Bolt face is very good. Grips show some nicks and scattered handling marks, but are otherwise sturdy and serviceable. Due to its durability, reliability, and ease of disassembly, Smith & Wesson's Model 76 proves to be a popular firearm among enthusiast shooters today, greatly owing to the numerous clones and copies that have spawned since the end of its production. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. THIS ITEM IS FULLY TRANSFERABLE ON AN ATF FORM 3 OR 4. MLW
