Manufactured by the Winchester Repeating Arms company and known as the 3rd Model 1883 Hotchkiss rifle. Chambered for the .45-70 Government cartridge with a unique internal tubular magazine. 28" round barrel with two barrel band, bayonet lug/front sight and slide adjustable rear right. Barrel marked "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN U.S.A." Left side of chamber marked "US", "VP" in circle and inspected "DFC". Rear tang marked "Model of 1883". Serial numbered 23944 on bottom of receiver forward of trigger guard. Two piece oil finished American walnut stocks with steel military buttplate. CONDITION: Good as exterior of metal has turned an even dove-grey patina. Wood stocks have numerous period impressions and minor period scratches. Stocks are full sized and good overall. Bore is very good with strong rifling and frosted grooves. Action works properly under manual operation. MKS
