A Yawner is a traditional statuette of an (exotic) man of medicine sticking out its tongue, sometimes with a pill on it. They were used from the 17th century onward on the façade of Dutch apothecaries or pharmacies to help those passing outside to recognize the shop as a pharmacy and to advertise the trustworthiness of medication sold. As such, the figurines were to display the exoticness of the wares, and could be of Arabs, Russians, Africans, but also figures in military attire. These are two great figural busts carved out of wood and have original paint. CONSIDERATIONS: There are some age cracks and stress cracks to the pieces, as well as some fading to the original paint, but the two busts have an amazing age and wonderful look.

Condition: (Good - Very Good).

Item Dimensions: Each: 12" x 12" x 19".
PAIR OF FIGURAL "YAWNER" BUSTS.
