Circa 1999. This coin-finished scalloped boxlock big game safari rifle is fit with 23 - 1/2" shiny blacked shoe lump barrels. Barrels are built with extractors, full-length machined wide rib with "Safari .416 Rigby No.23" and rib extension. Rib is fit with express rear sight with 1 standing leaf and 1 folding leaf and brass tipped front sight blade. Swivel loop for sling is attached to the bottom of the rib ahead of the forend. The right side of the barrel is roll stamped with 3 interlocking rings and "Krupp Stahl" while the left side is roll stamped "GSI Inc. Tville AL GEBR. MERKEL SUHL MADE IN GERMANY". Bottom of the right barrel marked "K5276" with German nitro proof marks. Barrel flats with serial number, caliber and nitro proof marks from the Suhl proof house. The coin finished body is nicely engraved with light coverage scrolls with the bottom also incorporating a man working at an anvil and top of the action is stippled. The boxlock action features a Greener cross bolt third fastener, side clips, disc set strikers, cocking indicator pins, a non-automatic safety with the letter "S" forward of serrated blued safety slide and blued double triggers protected by a lightly engraved blued trigger guard. The thumbpiece of the blued top lever is checkered on both sides. The reddish-brown European walnut stocked pistol hand grip with hard rubber grip cap, sharp 2-panel checkering, cheekpiece, swivel loop for sling and black rubber Decelerator recoil pad with spacer. Splinter forend with border engraved coin finished metal iron and Deeley style lever release. Interior of forend iron also coin finished with the number "16023". Rifle resides in a light brown leather trunk case with green interior and Merkel's brown leather trade label stitched to the interior of the case lid. A pair of nickel-plated .416 Rigby nickel-plated snap caps are stored inside the case. CONDITION: Very good. Barrels retain most of their original blue with a few light handling marks and rifling is also very good. Stock and forend with light handling marks. Action is tight and triggers are crisp. Case is good with handling and storage marks. A fine double rifle chambered for one of the all time classic safari cartridges.
