Lot consists of 7 Civil War engravings in original frames, 2 with replaced backboards. A) Gen. Burniside, colored, Currier & Ives. CONDITION: good. Minor foxing. B) Gen. McClellan, Kellogg, colored. CONDITION: Very good, but cream color paper. Three small foxing spots. C) The Brave Wife, Currier Ives, colored. CONDITION: Very good. Bright color. New backing. D) Gen. Sheridan, colored, Lloyd & Co. CONDITION: good. Small water stain lower left. E) Battle of Spottsylvania, Currier & Ives, colored. CONDITION: good. Water stain upper margin with slight crease. F) Gen. Grant and Family. Currier & Ives. Monochrome. CONDITION: good. Thin water stain left edge. Cross-stick frame. G) Battle of Fair Oaks, colored, Currier & Ives. CONDITION: good. Some foxing and dirt in margins. New backing. With distribution of photographs still limited, engravings were the source of most public perceptions of prominent figures and battles. The Brave Wife, with its McClellan-like officer leaving his family is an interesting combination of politics, patriotism, and sentimentality.
