Designed specifically for use with the M40 recoilless rifles, the M8C would be mounted on top of the M40 recoilless rifle and would fire a .50 caliber cartridge (12.7x77mm) that featured a ballistic match to the M40's HEAT and HEP rounds. The cartridge featured a point-detonating incendiary filler, which when contacting with its target, created a "puff" of smoke, allowing for a quick follow-up round from the 106mm M40 recoilless rifle below. This example is stamped "RIFLE, SPOTTING, CAL. 50, M8C/ MFD. BY SPRINGFIELD ARMORY U.S. PROPERTY" above the serial number "170305" on the top of the receiver, with a small Eagle within a square property stamp present just to the rear of the breech. Metal components exhibit a parkerized finish. This example is accompanied by a Bren tripod with a custom adapter, a spare bolt, 3 magazines, 2 extended magazines, ammo can of approximately 155 rounds of 12.7x77mm ammo, an original box Lake City Arsenal 10-round M48A1 Spotter Tracer ammunition, 2 bags of projectiles, ammo can of approximately 79 spent cartridge cases, as well as an original box of Lake City Arsenal .30 caliber M25 tracer ammunition. CONDITION: Metal components exhibit a mottled gray and brown patina overall, with some areas of original finish remaining in protected areas. Bore is dark within the grooves but otherwise retains well-defined rifling throughout. Tripod shows areas of oxidation overall but is otherwise serviceable. Magazines are all very good to excellent. A rare and very intriguing piece of US anti-tank weaponry, that paired with its fine assortment of accessories and ammunition, will enable one to continue firing at the range. MLW
