This cane was used for testing wine. This vintner's cane was used by removing the handle, then removing the hammer part, which will expose a drill (gimlet) that is used to made a hole in the wine barrel to test the wine. After the hole was plugged with a wooden plug, the hammer was used to seal it. There are plaques on the side of the shaft showing the different locations the vintner went to test the wines. C. 1910.
