World War II US Marine Corps bring-back grouping attributed to James K. Cummings. The group was originally purchased from the estate of James K. Cummings during 1993 in Orange County California. Cummings served in Company B, 1st Battalion, 29th Regiment, 6th Marine Division from the Division's activation through the occupation of China. The battle of Okinawa needs no introduction, and the 6th Marine Division's baptism by fire was one of the bloodiest battles of the Pacific War. According to paperwork which accompanies this group, these Japanese items were part of a once larger group of Cummings' military items which were originally purchased from his estate sale. The group has unfortunately since been split up and this group includes: (A) Civilian Japanese helmet which was converted for Army use. The helmet features its original tan camouflage paint, star, and is complete with its original liner. Interestingly, the helmet is marked with kanji and troop numbered on the interior rim. The kanji was translated and reads "No. 130 troop transport". CONDITION: Helmet retains most of its original wartime paint. Leather liner is pliable and exhibits scattered stains. The pillows behind the three leather liner tongues do not retain their padding. Overall very good. (B) Japanese WWII tropical pith helmet. Clear markings on the interior. CONDITION: Fragile. Missing Sweatband. Chinstrap is delicate. Scattered holes around the rim where bamboo padding is falling out. Overall fair. (C) Japanese Army Bugle. No markings. CONDITION: Slight oxidation, nice patina. Overall good. (D) Japanese wood box which was used to ship items home. Kanji was translated and reads "Kutani ware, Nishiki pottery plate". CONDITION: Fragile. Wood paneling is loose in areas. (E) Japanese WWII silk flag which measures 40" x 27". CONDITION: Scattered stains. Overall very good. (F) Japanese WWII Naval headband. Measures approximately 32 - 1/2" in length. CONDITION: Scattered stains, appear to be sweat or water. Faded colors. Overall good. Very nice attributed bring back grouping. JLD
