C. 1950's Sabena Douglas DC-7C cutaway model. Constructed of zinc, The model exhibits both the exterior and interior features of a DC-7C. After World War II, commercial aviation progressed at an extraordinary pace as airlines expanded their services and updated fleets with more advanced airliners in order to draw influence of customers and successfully contend with their competitors. Aircraft manufacturers were not only offering improved aircraft but also more comfortable and aesthetically pleasing cabin interiors, which became a crucial part of air travel as the range of airliners and the duration of flights increased. In order to promote these new interiors the airlines used as a variety of advertisements, as well as cutaway models of airliners, which afforded prospective customers a unique view inside the aircraft. The DC-7 was Douglas' largest and last piston engine airliner. This example is painted and decaled to represent one of the DC-7Cs in the Sabena fleet and the interior features the luxurious offerings of a "modern" DC-7C. The interior features the first class portion, coach, galley, and even the bathroom. While the exterior is zinc, the interior is constructed mostly of wood and includes a carpeted floor, upholstered seats, and small wood figures which represent passengers. Everything in the cabin is finely detailed, from the drawers of the galley to the features of each individual passenger. The plane is mounted on a plastic base which supports the fuselage and detachable wing. The propellers are constructed of clear plastic in order to simulate rotation. The cutaway model measures approximately 15" tall, with the fuselage measuring 35", and a wingspan of 23 - 1/2". This model was manufactured by Raise Up of Rotterdam, Holland and is marked as such on the underside of the fuselage. The paint is in very good condition with some scattered scratches and dings as well as evident aging. Some chips to the paint on the wingtip and rubbing evident where the wing is supported by the mount. Cracks in the paint are exhibited where the exterior and interior connect. Decals are also very good, with a few that exhibit scattered areas of loss and peeling. Small areas of white oxidation exhibited in some areas. Some areas of carpet loss to the interior. One galley wall is loose. Some passengers exhibit light blemishes. Overall very good. This is an excellent example of a 1950's cutaway airline model which represents a popular aircraft from the blossoming era of commercial aviation.
