May's Cut Plug. Sometimes called the Cadillacs of the tin can world, these are among the most collectible oftobacco tins. Unknown why they are called Roly Poly, as the notation on bottom of tins say “Brownie tin.” Each Roly Poly held a pound of tobacco from the American Tobacco Company. The four company brands used in these tins were Mayo’s, Dixie Queen, U.S. Marine and Red Indian. The first design, the storekeeper, waspatented in November, 1912. The characters are Mammy, Dutchman, Satisfied Customer, Storekeeper, Man from Scotland Yard and Singing Waiter. Manufactured by Tindeco.
