Impressive Joseph Rodgers & Sons bowie knife. Joseph Rodgers & Sons began work at 6 Norfolk Street in Sheffield beginning in approximately 1724 and this knife was manufactured during the mid-late 19th century. The knife features a large 9 - 1/2" clip point blade that is marked "JOSEPH RODGERS & SONS / 6 NORFOLK STREET / SHEFFIELD" on the ricasso. Handle with full tang, fine German silvered cross guard and stag grip scales which are held in place by 5 retaining pins on each scale. The left grip scale features a thin 1 - 1/2" German silvered escutcheon. The knife is complete with a brown leather scabbard which features silvered mounts. CONDITION: The blade remains bright with evidence of an older cleaning and sharpening. Scattered areas of spotting with light pitting. German silvered crossguard has yellowed and exhibits small blemishes. Stag grip scales remain firmly affixed to the knife. Center seamed scabbard exhibits scuffs and light creases. Seam remains tight. Mounts exhibit scattered blemishes and small dents. There is evidence of a belt loop which has since separated from the scabbard. Lower mount is missing the retaining pin. A fine example of a 19th century bowie knife. Overall good.
