December 13-15, 2022 Collectible Firearms & Militaria
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/14/2022
Manufactured through 1875 as the main service arm of France, the Chassepot's single shot bolt action used paper cartridges with an ignition system very similar to the Dreyse needle gun. This example is dated "1867" and manufactured in the first "F" block of production at St. Etienne, making its use in the Franco-Prussian War likely. Standard configuration with 31" round barrel chambered in 11mm Chassepot with blade front sight and ladder rear. Receiver is correctly unmarked as is only seen on 1867 dated rifles. Full length plain walnut stock with iron mounts. Complete with bayonet and scabbard. CONDITION: Good surplus condition. In-the-white components have developed a honest light brown patina. Stock has a dark, crackled surface with impressions throughout. Good strong bore and mechanics. No cleaning rod present. Bayonet catch is damaged, locking it onto the rifle. BAS
