MP-40 machine gun manufactured during the first year of official MP-40 production at Steyr-Daimler-Puch. The top of the lower assembly is stamped "MP40 / 660/ 40", with together with Steyr's "bnz" code and "(Eagle) / 623" waffenamts present on the left side of the receiver. Additional Steyr "(Eagle) / 623" waffenamts are present on most exterior components. Receiver is fitted with an early flat side magazine housing that features a fully checkered magazine release button. Metal components exhibit a blued finish, with the lower assembly comprised of brown bakelite. Bolt is matching with provision for sliding lock piece which locks the bolt forward in the closed position, but this sliding piece as well as spring and ball-bearing are not present. No firing pin present, but these are readily available. One magazine is included with this gun. Matching numbers are present on the lower assembly, stock, receiver tube, rear sight assembly barrel, front sight hood, bolt, as well as the telescoping recoil spring. Current registration form indicates, "Erma Werke, Germany” as the manufacturer, even though this is actually a Steyr manufactured gun. CONDTION: Metal components retain the majority of their original period blue finish, exhibiting areas of wear and thinning overall that show through to a pleasant brown patina, as well as some scattered spots of surface oxidation. Near excellent bore, exhibiting well defined rifling throughout. Bakelite furniture shows some nicks and scattered marks from handling and storage, but is otherwise fine. This is a full-auto only machine gun. A very rare and desirable first year of production Steyr MP-40 machine gun, that with the addition of a few readily available components, will be a fine example of this iconic WW 2 German machine gun.
