Lot consists of a knife with 6" double edged spear point blade marked "ROBERT / LINGARD / SHEFFIELD" maker mark at ricasso. Plain nickel silver guard. Cast cutlery handle with rocailles. Scabbard with gilt stamping, lines, and vines. Nickel silver throat missing stud. The knife was passed down with a faux book made of marble with the Lord's Prayer on reverse as well as 7 cabinet cards related to the 78th Illinois Infantry Regiment. All are marked with names on obverse or reverse, the most interesting depicts a woman standing by a chair with pencil writing on reverse that reads "Recieved at Peach Tree-creek, Ga July 18th 1864 Just Before the Charge of the 78th". The knife exhibits wear, including areas of pitting on the blade with patinaed guard and grip. Cabinet cards exhibit shaved corners and handling wear with clear inscriptions. An interesting lot tied to a hard-fought unit. CONDITION: Good.
