This Maxim 08/15 was manufactured by J.P. Sauer & Sohn in 1918, and retains its matching top cover, charging handle, and pistol grip. The steam port cover and buttstock wood are not numbered, and this cataloger cannot discern a serial number on the green repainted fusee cover either. The feed block and lock are mismatched to the gun. Bipod is a high-quality reproduction, so good one might mistake it as an original. No drum hanger present but there is a broken case extractor, reproduction leather sling, and reproduction steam hose with fitting, which attaches properly to the steam port cover. Electronic NFA registry indicates “GERMANY” as the manufacturer. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is extremely fine original blued finish with repainted green water jacket, fusee cover, and bipod. Wood thumbpieces not present on water fill cap. Fusee cover exhibits several dings as do the wood furnishings, yet all remain serviceable. Bore is near excellent, shiny and bright. Lock and extractor face are extremely fine. Mechanics are crisp and smooth. The 08/15 Maxim was fielded in large numbers to great effect as the German “light” machine gun of World War I and remained in service throughout the Weimar era of the 1920s and into the Nazi era of the 1930s, eventually becoming a rear echelon weapon through the end of World War II. This is a rather fine example that presents well and no doubt would be fun to shoot at the range as well. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. THIS ITEM IS FULLY TRANSFERABLE ON AN ATF FORM 3 OR 4 AS CURIO AND RELIC ELIGIBLE. JWK 2023-9-46
