Designed by Alfredo Scotti, the Scotti Model X semi-automatic rifle was designed and produced in extremely limited numbers (250 total) for the 1934 Royal Italian Army trials, with the intent to utilize preexisting stocks of surplus Carcano M91 barrels, bayonet lugs, and trigger guard/magazine housings, amongst other small parts and components that the Royal Arms Factory of Terni had produced to simplify production. This example is marked "SCOTTI/ MOD. X" over the chamber, with "GNUTTI" within an oval on the left. Left receiver sidewall is marked "ARMI AUTOMATICHE SCOTTI - BRESCIA -". The faceted breech end of the barrel is stamped "TERNI" on the top flat, with "1933 XI" on the right and the serial number "129" above Italian proofs on the left flats. Metal components are blued, while the stock and handguard comprise solid wood. Matching numbers are on the receiver, receiver endcap, trigger, dust cover, barrel, bolt body, firing pin, bolt head, and buttstock. Op rod is unnumbered. Front barrel band screw is a replacement. CONDITION: Metal components retain large amounts of their original factory finish, exhibiting areas of wear and thinning overall that show through to pleasant gray and brown patinas. Dark bore with fair rifling throughout. Stock exhibits numerous dings, nicks, and marks from storage and handling, with a couple minor losses, but is otherwise fine. A scarce and seldom encountered Italian interwar experimental rifle.
