Circa 1891. An early hammered .500/.450 Black Powder Express rifle built with heavy, brown Damascus 28" double rifle barrels. Barrels with extractors and full length wide filed rib. Rib with one standing sight regulated for 100 yards and 2 folding sights regulated for 200 and 300 yards. Rib also with standing front blade sight. Barrels read "STEPHEN GRANT & SONS" on left and "67A St. JAMES STREET, LONDON" on right. Barrel flats stamped with proofs, "7659", "450EX", "140-365". Bottom rib with eye for sling loop. Handsome side lever action with low engraved and checkered hammers, blacked, engraved checkered side lever, fire blued double triggers and full coverage scroll. "STEPHEN GRANT & SONS" engraved at bar. Trigger guard is blacked and with matched scroll engraving. Long bottom strap is blacked with matched engraving and serial number, "7659". Water table with serial number and proof stamp. Walnut stock with pistol grip, grip with sharp point checkering and steel engraved grip cap. Pistol grip with fine sharp checkering. Stock with beaded cheekpiece, eye for sling loop, gold oval with engraved sun face dial and steel checkered duck-tailed buttplate. Splinter forend with engraved escutcheon and Anson push forend release. Rifle lives in an oak and leather case with brass corners. Case with vintage paper "STEPHEN GRANT & SONS" trade label and accessories including reloading equipment. CONDITION: Very good. Barrels are very good with most of their color remaining and good rifling in bores. Action is very good with traces of case colors. Stock and forend both very good. Case is very good.
